1 John 5:6-12 This is he who came by water and blood- Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
The Apostle John is making the case that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The people of his day understood more clearly than we do that “Son of God” makes a person equal with God. The Son of God is by nature God, the Creator (John 10:33-36). John writes in John 1:1-3, 14 that Jesus Christ is God. John gives three witnesses to validate that Jesus is the Son of God. The Spirit and the water and the blood testify that Jesus is the Son of God. The Spirit is God testifying, as we see by comparing verses 7 and 10. The water was the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. God testified at that time that Jesus was His Son and John testified that Jesus was the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, the Son of God (Matthew 3:13-17; John 1:29-34). Jesus’s blood shed on the cross testifies that Jesus cleansed us from all sin and coincides with John’s testimony that the Son of God takes away the sin of the world (1 John 1:7; Hebrew 9:22).
Verse 11 gives us what the testimony is that John is writing about, “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” The Spirit, the water and the blood testify that having Jesus is having eternal life. John and every believer proclaim this testimony that God has given eternal life to all who believe in His Son.
Those who believe God have the testimony of verse 11 in him. Whoever does not believe the testimony of verse 11 calls God a liar.
We who believe that God has given us eternal life in Jesus Christ need to follow the Apostle John’s example given in 1 John 1:1-4. We to testify that we have eternal life because we believed Jesus is the Son of God and proclaim it to all around us.
