Ephesians 4:11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Our primary assignment given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ is to make disciples of all in our sphere of influence. Jonah was sent to Nineveh, a city of 120,000 to preach God's word to them. The entire city repented of their sinful ways, turned to the Lord and were saved from the judgment of God (Jonah 3:1-10). What will it take for the local church today to get the word to its region in the most powerful and effective way. Parents will need to make disciples of their children by teaching them the word of God formally and informally 24/7 and by living it out before their children (Psalm 78:1-8; Proverbs 6:20; Ephesians 6:1-4) . Each believer will need to follow Jesus by denying himself, taking up his cross, being willing to lose his life for Jesus' sake, by putting Jesus first above all relationships and by being willing to give up everything (Matthew 4:19; 16:24-25; Luke 14:26,33). Each person in the local church will need to know and do his part to build the Body up in love (Ephesians 4:11-16)
Ephesians 4:11 gives us people with word gifts that are to restore people to be able to do their part in building up the Body in love. People need to learn the word of God, the truth, so they are able to do their assigned work. 2 Timothy 3:16,17 says, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness that the man/woman of God may be fully equipped for every good work." Think how much better our physical body works when every part is healthy and working. If we stub our toe and break it, our body is greatly limited in what it can do. The person has to give the toe special attention to restore it to full function. A million dollar football star is prevented from playing because of turf toe and limits the teams ability to successfully complete its mission of winning the football game.
Each believer has gifts of grace that are needed for the Body to be built up to full stature and to be most effective in completing its primary purpose of reaching its region with the message of Jesus Christ. Are you using your gift to build the Body up in love? Are you letting yourself be built up in love by other parts of the Body? A healthy Body comes together not just to receive, but to give. If all in the Body followed the truth of 1 Peter 4:10 and came together to give gifts of grace to each other, we would have a built up Body of Christ able to most effectively reach its region with the message of Jesus Christ.
