Galatians 5:1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Fact: Jesus Christ has set us free. When He died on the cross, Jesus set us free from slavery to sin and slavery to Satan (Romans 6:6-7; Hebrews 2:14-15). We no longer are under the threat of death by doing what our sin nature dictates or not doing what Satan tempts. The wages of sin is death and the threat of Satan is death. Jesus removed the penalty of sin and the power of Satan when He died on the cross. Jesus rose again from the dead to give us new life (Romans 6:4). Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to live in us to empower us to obey the Word of God and live in His blessing (John 14:16-17; Luke 11:28). The Holy Spirit equipped us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies, with everything we need for life and godliness and with the fruit of the Spirit (Ephesians 1:3; 2 Peter 1:3-4; Galatians 5:22-23). We access these resources by faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20). We exercise faith when we attempt to obey Jesus expecting Him to fulfill our act of faith with His power.
Command: Paul commands us to stand firm continually in freedom we have received from Jesus when we repented of our sin, believed He died on the cross for our sins, rose again from the dead on the third day and is Lord. We stand firm in freedom by living life obedient to His commands by faith in the Son of God, not by depending upon ourselves. A person living in freedom does not say, "I can do this by myself, by my skill and power." A person standing firm in freedom says, "I can do this with Jesus' help, by His skill and power."
Are you standing firm in the freedom Christ has given us? You know you are if you are attempting to live in obedience to the Word of God using the power and resources of God by faith in the Son of God.
