Sin is doing what God has said not to do and not doing what God has said to do (James 2:10; 4:17) Jesus came to save us from us from sin's penalty which is physical death and eternal torment (Romans 6:23; Revelation 21:8). He died on the cross to pay the penalty for sin and to break the power of sin (Romans 5:10; 6:6-7)). During His time physically walking the earth, Jesus trained 12 men and assigned them the task of teaching the truth, the gospel, to all people. Right before He left He gave the following command, "Go and make disciples of all people groups, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you..." (Matthew 28:19-20). After He ascended back to His heavenly throne, He sent His Holy Spirit to save, teach, and empower every person who repented of his/her sin and believed the gospel (Ephesians 1:13-20; Mark 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9) so he/she could fulfill His command to make disciples.
God has given each of us the assignment to make disciples. He has also given each of us work assignments that put us in a position to reach all the people He desires to save from the penalty and power of sin. A mother and father have the work assignment of raising their kids to maturity and making them disciples of Jesus Christ. The teacher has the assignment to make disciples among all the people he/she works among. The coach, the mill worker, the doctor, the mayor, etc., all have been given work assignments that bring them into contact with people who need to repent and believe the gospel.
The Lord assigned a man to be a city engineer. He did his job as engineer to the best of his ability. He remembered his assignment to make disciples and became known as the man who talks about Jesus. The man helped the mayor of the city become a disciple. The Mayor helped some in his family become disciples. The mayor's son helped his family become disciples. The mayor's daughter went to other countries as a nurse and helped many people become disciples. This all happened because the city engineer did his assigned work of being an engineer and a disciple-maker.
Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
We need to do our work assignments as mother, father, husband, wife, teacher, doctor, mechanic, etc. to the best of our ability and while going about our work assignment, we need to be doing the assignment all believers have been given - make disciples.
