Revelation 6:3-4 When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" 4 And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that men should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.
This is something that would take place from 90 AD until the time of the establishment of the 1000 years reign of Jesus Christ upon the earth (Revelation 1:19b; 20:1-6). Jesus foretold in Matthew 24:6-7a that we would have wars and that nations would fight other nations, and kingdoms other kingdoms.
We can expect murder and war to continue within nations and among nations until the time when Jesus Christ returns to rule the earth in righteousness for one thousand years. The questions we face knowing this, are: How big an army should we have? How big a police department should we have? Should believers be armed to defend themselves?
The answers to these questions were given by Jesus in Luke 22:36 when He told the disciples to buy a sword if they didn’t have one. A sword is used to defend oneself with deadly force if necessary. Jesus revealed His will concerning the above questions to the Apostle Paul in Romans 13:1-4. The government is established by God and is to use deadly force to protect people from aggressive wrong-doers.
We are not pacifists when it comes to protecting ourselves from evil people who seek to subdue us by force. Jesus told us to “turn the other cheek” when individually we are challenged to fight, but He did not tell us to turn the other cheek when we are attacked with evil intent. We are to defend our nation, our communities and our homes – even to the point of using deadly force.
