Romans 5:12-14 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned- 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
Our text states clearly that death came into the world through one man. This stands in stark contrast with the teaching of evolution. Evolution teaches that death occurred before man evolved. The teaching of evolution contradicts the Bible and cannot be true if the Bible is true. The teaching of evolution is a major cause of the lack of belief in the Bible as the Word of God. The scientific facts fit better with a six day creation 6200+ years ago than with a world that is billions of years old (see answersingenesis.org for information to validate this statement about science).
Paul is making the point that all people, including Adam and Eve, are infected with sin and will die. All haven’t sinned like Adam, that is, Adam sinned by choice and brought sin into the world. All the offspring of Adam and Eve sin because we have been infected by sin. Sin infected all of creation (Romans 8:19-22) and all are subject to death.
The Law was given to Moses to reveal God’s standard for people and what to do when the standard was broken. The Law (means “instruction of God”) reveals sin, just as sunlight reveals streaked and dirty windows. The window may look clean until the sun shines on it and reveals it is not. Even so, when the Law is compared with our “good” life (see Proverbs 30:12, 20; Exodus 20:14 for an example) we will see we have sinned. When we know we have sinned and the penalty of sin is death, then we will be prepared to repent of our sin and believe the gospel. If we know that all are subject to sin and death, then we will also be prepared to call people to repent and believe the gospel just as Jesus did (Mark 1:15). Please note that death includes the body we live in. Our physical body will rot and decay and cease to exist. However, death also refers to the existence of our soul and spirit in the Lake of Fire, a place of eternal torment (Matthew 25:46; Revelation 21:8). Have you repented of your sin and believed the gospel? Are you calling the people around you to repent and believe the gospel?
