1 John 3:16-18 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Jesus taught His true disciples to love others as He loved them. Jesus held nothing back to meet the needs of people He loved. He gave up His life to meet the need of the people He loved. A true disciple of Christ is to give up his life as the ultimate expression of his love for people. The Lord Jesus has given every true disciple the power to do this.
A person who claims to love people and yet withholds the material goods a person needs when it is in his power to meet the need, is lying. The person who is able to meet a genuine need of a person and closes his heart is not a true disciple and God’s love does not abide in him. A person who is able to work and won’t doesn’t have a genuine need for food (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Expressing love to this person is withholding food from him in obedience to the Lord’s command.
We are to tell people we love them and back up our words by meeting their genuine needs according to our ability to do so (2 Corinthians 8:8-15).
