Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, "God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him." 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
Our text today reveals Eve's thoughts when she bore a son and called him Seth. She believed that God replaced Abel with Seth. When Seth had a son, he named him Enosh. Enosh means "mankind" and according a Hebrew dictionary is a word used that reminds man of his transience and lowly position before Almighty God. Enosh seems to have been used to help people see their need for God and begin to call upon Him.
What can we learn from this passage of Scripture? We can learn that one man can make a difference in his generation. This lesson teaches us that we can make a difference among the people we live among. A favorite and encouraging verse that I live by is John 15:16. Jesus said, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that remains so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give it to you." Just as God appointed Eve to have a son who had a son in whose generation people began to call on the Lord, so each of us who believe have been appointed to help our generation call upon the Lord. Our generation desperately needs to recognize our need for the Lord. We are the people chosen by God to help our people know the deadly consequences of sin and their need to call upon the Lord to be saved from their sin. The Apostle Paul states it perfectly in the letter he wrote to the Christians in Rome:
Romans 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 14 But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!"
It seems Enosh helped people call on the Lord in his generation. We are to do the same. Ask the Lord to help you know you are sent (John 17:18) and move you to go and tell people of their need to believe in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world (Matthew 28:19-20).
