Genesis 6:1-7 When man began to be many on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God (elohim in Hebrew) saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years." 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were
the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. 5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the LORD
said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them."
The time period of Genesis 6:1-4 would likely have been from maybe 100 AC (After Creation) until 1436 AC (the flood of 1656 AC – 120 yrs of Genesis 6:3). The population 120 years before the flood (1656 AC) would have been large even if death and disease may have held it to increase far less than it had from the day of creation until the day sin entered the world – sometime around 100 years after God created Adam and Eve. (Why around 100 years after creation happened? Eve thought she had birthed the offspring that God had said would wound the head of Satan – Genesis 4:1. Cain and Abel had grown int0 manhood – Abel was a prophet and shepherd, Cain was a farmer- Genesis 4:2. Seth was born in Adam’s 130th year. 130 -100= 30 and would have been an adult age for Cain and Abel.) The flood occurred 1656 years after creation. Genesis 6:3 tells us the Lord gave mankind 120 years to respond to Noah’s righteous preaching (2 Peter 2:5 tells us Noah was a preacher of righteousness). Read the previous paragraph again slowly and thoughtfully so it makes sense to you. It is a lot of information in a little space. The time period of Genesis 6:1-4 was about 1436 years after sin entered the world.
Who are the “sons of God”? The Hebrew word for “God” is “Elohim”. Elohim can be translated, “God”, “gods”, “judges”, “angels”, and “mighty ones”. We know that angels neither marry nor are given in marriage, they do not reproduce. Angels are not referred to by “sons of God”. We know that
humans only reproduce with humans. The “sons of God” or "sons of mighty ones" were rulers or mighty ones in the human race. Psalm 82:1-8 makes it clear sons of God are rulers of nations. The rulers were the “mighty ones” in the midst of the people they ruled. “Sons of God” or "sons of mighty ones" were the rulers among mankind. The rulers took the best of the women for themselves, multiple wives and concubines, and the offspring of the “mighty ones” and “best women” became mighty men of their day, men of renown.
Who are the Nephilim? The word may be of unknown origin and mean "heroes" or "fierce warriors" etc, The RSV and NIV transliteration "Nephilim" is safer and may be correct in referring the noun to
a race or nation. (TWOT Lexicon)
What was the condition of man on earth 120 years before the flood? 5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
What was God going to do because of mankind’s wickedness? 7 So the LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them."
Noah was preaching righteousness to the wicked people for the entire 120 years (Genesis 4:3) God gave them time to repent and turn from their wickedness. The people didn’t listen and the flood came upon the earth. Jesus taught us that before His return the people on the earth would be like the people in the days of Noah (Matthew 24:36-39). We, like Noah are to be preaching righteousness to the world and to our family. We are to live holy lives for people to see Jesus. We are to do all we can in word and deed to help our family repent of their sin and believe the gospel so they will be saved from God’s judgment by being safely in Christ. Are you doing these things? If not, why not?
