Genesis 6:11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, "I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life
under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They
shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them." 22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
It is good to label each part of the text at times in order to get the most out of it.
6:11 The fact: The earth was corrupt in God's sight and full of violence. Insight question: Is the earth corrupt in God's sight right now? Galatians 1:4 instructs us that we live in a "present evil age".
6:12 God sees all the earth and how we have corrupted our ways. Insight question: What does God see today? Romans 3:23 informs us of what the Lord sees, "All have sinned...". All of us are corrupt in our ways today.
6:13,17 God is a just God and must punish sin. He determined that after Noah had preached righteousness for 120 years (Genesis 6:3; 2 Peter 2:5) He would destroy all flesh on the earth, everything on the earth would die by drowning. He was going to flood the entire earth.
6:14a, 18-21 God had a plan to save all who sought Him. Noah sought the Lord and would be saved by God. Today God has a plan to save people who seek Him. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone that believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." Jesus called the people who sought Him (see Luke 7:29-30) to repent and believe the gospel (the gospel: Jesus died on the cross for our sins, rose again victorious on the third day and is Lord of all). Peter tells us that God will destroy the earth and all in it by fire when He judges the earth again because all have sinned (see 2 Peter 3:5-7)
6:14b-16 God gave Noah the details of what he needed to do to be saved from the world wide flood that was coming to judge the corrupt earth. Today God is announcing what we must do to be saved through His people who are proclaiming His plan of salvation (see Romans 10:13-15).
6:22 Noah obeyed God and was saved. People today need to obey the Lord's commands to repent and believe the gospel in order to be saved. God gives us the power to repent and believe the gospel.
Noah is a good example to follow. Hebrews 11:7 "By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith." We have been warned of a coming judgment. We need to exercise God-given faith and help our family know the gospel so they can be saved. We do this by daily living out God's word for our family to see and teaching God's word for our family to hear. Are you doing what it takes to help your family be saved from the coming judgment?
