Hebrews 5:11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
Our passage today describes the believers in Christ as slow to learn or lazy to learn. This is the condition of many believers today. The solution is to teach the "lazy to learn" believers the milk of the word. The milk of the word consists of six foundational teachings: (1) Repentance from acts that lead to death (sin); (2) Faith in God; (3) Baptisms; (4) Laying on of hands; (5) The resurrection of the dead; and (6) Eternal judgment. These teachings are essential for living a fruitful, mature Christian life. If we don't know and live the foundational milk teachings, then we won't understand and live the solid food of the Word, teaching about righteousness. If we don't understand and live righteously, then we are not bearing fruit and living an abundant life.
Three types of believers need milk. The infant believer who just received Jesus as Lord and Savior, needs the milk teachings (1 Peter 2:2). The carnal or worldly believer who lives according to the ways of the sin nature, needs the milk teachings (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). The "lazy to learn" believer needs the milk teachings to go on to maturity and the freedom of abundant living (Hebrews 5:11-13).
Do you know, live and have the ability to teach the "Milk of the Word"? All believers need to learn and have ready to use in an instant, the foundational Milk of the Word. Just as we first build the foundation of a house and then build the house upon it, so we lay the foundation, the Milk of the word, and build upon it with teaching about righteousness, the commands of Christ (solid food). Just as a foundation is always needed under the house, so the Milk of the Word is always foundational for the mature Christian.
