Matthew 10:34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his
own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Reality is hard to hear. Jesus tells us that He didn't come to bring relational peace in all families. He states clearly that following Him can cause a person's own household to be divided and be enemies. Paul and Peter address husbands and wives telling them that their primary assignment when they have an unbelieving mate is to live so that their mate might be saved (1 Corinthians 7:16; 1 Peter 3:1). This is difficult and can only be done be done with God's help.
What Jesus did come to give us is abundant and eternal life (John 10:10b). Abundant life is gained by having personal peace. Jesus came to give this to each who believes (John 14:27). Eternal life is gained by having peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).
We gain peace with God by repenting of our sins, believing the gospel and confessing Jesus as Lord (Mark 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9). We gain personal peace when the Holy Spirit enters our life upon belief in the gospel (Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 5:22-23). We experience personal peace in a sinful world, in a divided home, by practicing Matthew 10:37-39. We are to put God first above all relationships by listening to Him and obeying Him (vs. 37). We are to take up our cross and follow Jesus to the point of death and thus will find life worth living (vss.38-39).
Note: You will benefit greatly by looking up and reading the scripture references in parentheses.
Are you living in a divided home? You are in a battle for the people in your family who don't believe. You can best win them by living totally for Jesus. As you live totally for Jesus He will gie ya peace that passes all understanding and a joy that knows no bounds.
