Matthew 13:18 "Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."
We gain much insight what we are up against when we sow the word of God into the lives of the people around us - our field to farm. Some of the seed we sow lands among "the thorns". The people that are characterized as "the thorns" are people so concerned about the cares of the world and gaining its wealth that the word of God has no impact in their lives. Luke adds another characteristic that causes people to hear God's word and not let it affect their life, "pleasures of life" (Luke 8:14).
"Cares of the world" means all the worries that choke the word out of peoples lives. Make a list of the worries of the world you see people struggling with. Worries can dominate us so much that God's word seems impotent to help us in life. People can wrongly think that money will give them a good life and give all their effort to making money, only to find it is unable to satisfy and keeps them from enjoying what money can't buy. Some people spend all their time seeking pleasure and have no time for God's Word. They hear God's word but never practice God's word and so never experience the fruit that comes from living according to God's word.
How can we keep the thorns from hindering our seed from growing and bearing fruit? We can live out God's word before the people being choked. We can pray for the people to see how good God's Word is. We can keep sowing the seed into their lives. Worry, wealth and pleasures of the world do not produce abundant life. Living according to God's will by faith in the Son of God produces a life that is good, pleasing and perfect or, using synonyms, gratifying, satisfying, and completing.
