Matthew 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."
Our text occurs during the fourth watch of the night which is between 3am and 6am. The disciples had spent the previous day serving with Jesus and saw Him feed five thousand plus people with five loaves of bread and two fish. They were then told to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee in their boat and wait for Jesus. The wind and waves made the going hard and the disciples had labored far into the night when Jesus came to them walking on the water. They were tired and didn't recognize Jesus. They thought He was a ghost and were very afraid. Jesus announced His presence, encouraged them and told them not to be afraid.
What can we learn from this? Jesus comes to us when we are tired and experiencing adverse circumstances. He calls us to be courageous and to not be afraid. He will get us to our destination.
Paul's words to the Philippians are a fitting way to help us see Jesus will help us. Philippians 1:6 "I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
