Matthew 15:10 And he called the people to him and said to them, "Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person." 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" 13 He answered, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit." 15 But Peter said to him, "Explain the parable to us." 16 And he said, "Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone."
Jesus tells us plainly that our sin problem is internal, not external. Eating food with unwashed hands does not make us guilty of sin. Being around thieves does not make us sin. Being around food does not make us sin. Being around a sexually immoral person does not make us sin. Being around a ungodly husband or wife or child does not make us sin. Our environment does not make us sin. Removing externals, such as food, sexually immoral people, thieves, etc. does not remove our propensity to sin. Jesus said our sin is inherit, that it comes from our heart and is internal.
Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"
Romans 7:17,18,24 "So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out....Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?"
James 1:14-15 "But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."
Who will deliver me from this body of death? JESUS!
Romans 7:25 "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin."
Romans 8:7-9 "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You (the believer), however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him."
Think about this: We who have repented of our sin and believed the gospel have the power to overcome our internal propensity to sin. I will cover how we use this power in the coming devotionals
