Matthew 19:23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter said in reply, "See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
The disciples were "greatly astonished" that rich people would have difficulty entering the kingdom of heaven. Why? Wealth was considered a sign that a was blessed of God. The thought was that surely a rich person would enter the kingdom of heaven if anyone would. However, Jesus turned that thinking upside down when He stated it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. The disciples then asked, "Who then can be saved?" with the implication that if a rich person has difficulty, how about we common folk?
Jesus told the disciples concerning peoples' salvation, "Nothing is impossible with God." When we get discouraged about any person ever being saved, we are not to give up hope because nothing is impossible with God. We are to continue to pray for a person's salvation no matter how remote it seems - nothing is impossible with God.
Peter wanted to know what those who left everything to follow Jesus would receive. The Twelve will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Everyone who has left everything, including family, for Jesus's sake will receive a hundred times what they left and inherit eternal life. We cannot lose when we leave everything to follow Jesus. We can only gain.
Have you or are you willing to leave everything to follow Jesus? Are you giving up hope on some person being saved? Give up everything to follow Jesus and experience the truth of Jesus' words. Hold on to hope for the most impossible person to be saved. Nothing is impossible with God.
