Matthew 5:13-16 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your
light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Notice who we are in Christ. We are the "salt of the earth". Salt is a preservative. Imagine what happens to the food that is not preserved by salt. It rots and stinks. Imagine what happens to the people of the earth that are not are preserved with salt, the culture rots and stinks. When the church is strong in a culture the culture thrives in good ways. When the church conforms to the ways of the world, the culture rots and stinks.
We are the light of the world. Light brings life in the world. Light allows us to see what makes us stumble and avoid those things. Light keeps sin in check. What do people do at night to prevent theft? People install lights. "Deeds of darkness" bring what picture to your mind? When the church is strong, light keeps sin at bay. When the church is week, deeds of darkness are on the increase.
How do we fulfill what we are as believers in Christ. How are we salt and light. We function as salt and light by trusting and obeying what Jesus has taught us in the Bible. We need to daily read the Word of God and live it out in our daily lives. We need to teach it daily to our family. We need to share at every opportunity with the people in our sphere of influence. We need to make sure we send people out from us to plant new churches in dark cultures. Are you salt and light?
