Matthew 5:43-48 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Jesus Christ taught us how to live, set us an example that we are to follow and empowered us to do so. Jesus came to save His people from their sin and take away the sin of the world. He taught us how to overcome sin. He lived as an example of a person overcoming sin. He overcame sin by dying on the cross and rising again from the dead. He offered to all people the ability to overcome sin when He said, "Repent and believe the gospel". What is the gospel or good news? Jesus died on the cross satisfying the penalty of sin which is death, rose again from the dead on the third day and ascended into heaven to rule as Lord over all creation. When we admit we sin and turn from sin to Jesus, believe He rose from the dead on the third day as He said He would and confess Him as Lord of our life, then the Holy Spirit of God comes to live in us and empower us to live as Jesus lived, in victory over sin.
We gain victory over sin by loving our enemies. Jesus did this. How? He loved people by obeying His Father. Jesus taught us that the greatest expression of love was to lay down his life for another. Jesus obeyed God's will for Him to lay down His life for His enemies, sinful people. Romans 5:8 says, "God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus loved His enemies by obeying His Father's commands. We love our enemies, not by having great feelings for them, but by obeying the commands of God, just as Jesus did, leaving us an example to follow. The Apostle John told us how to express love in 2 John 6, "And this is love, that we walk in obedience to His commands...". Every person who has repented of his/her sin and believed the gospel has the power of the Holy Spirit to obey what Jesus taught and overcome sin. Every person who believes in Jesus has the power to love his/her enemies.
We love our enemies by obeying the teaching of Jesus by faith. We live by faith when learn what Jesus taught and attempt to obey expecting Jesus to fulfill our attempt with His power. Are you able to love your enemies because you have repented of your sin and believed the gospel? If you are able, are you loving your enemies by obeying the commands of God by faith? Jesus taught us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. When we obey Jesus we love our enemies and gain victory over sin.
