Matthew 8:28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs." 32 And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
Jesus was confronted by two men possessed by demons as He got out on the east side of the Sea of Galilee. The demons recognized and communicated with Jesus. Jesus set the man free from the demons by allowing them to inhabit a herd of pigs nearby. The pigs rushed into the sea and drowned. Demons
are destructive. The herdsmen witnessed what had happened and went into the city to tell all that
happened. The people of the city saw the pigs were gone and asked Jesus to move on, which He did.
What can we learn from this?
Jesus is greater than demons. Ephesians 6:12 instructs us that demons are our enemy, not people.
Demons can overpower people, but are subject to Jesus. As we submit to Jesus and resist the demons by living in the truth (James 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-18), the demons will flee from us. Jesus can set us free from the powers of darkness.
Following are scriptures that teach our victory in Christ over the spiritual powers of darkness.
Hebrews 2:14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the
devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
