Matthew 8:5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, 6 "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly." 7 And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." 8 But the centurion replied, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the
kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; let it be done for you as you have believed." And the
servant was healed at that very moment.
A centurion is a Roman officer in charge of 100 soldiers. He was a man of standing and power, a man with servants. He came to Jesus acknowledging his unworthiness to be in Jesus' presence. He came to Jesus because he cared about his suffering servant. Most importantly, he came to Jesus believing Jesus could heal his servant. He believed Jesus had authority to heal his paralyzed servant just as he had the power to command his soldiers what to do.
Jesus marveled at the faith of this gentile soldier and stated no one in the nation of Israel had such faith. The people of Israel had forgotten what a caring, powerful God they served. The people of Israel trusted in themselves rather in their God. The people in the nations around Israel, the gentiles, saw that Jesus was sent by God to help them and believed before the Jews. Many Israelites will be judged and cast into the outer darkness away from the Lord forever because they did not see what God was doing among them. Jesus healed the soldier's servant in response to his faith.
Who are you like? Are you like the Israelites who couldn't see that God had sent Jesus to them to deliver them from their sin and its consequences? Are you like the centurion who recognized the authority, power and love of God in Jesus and humbled himself to gain His help? The centurion received help from Jesus because he believed in Him. The Jewish people not only didn't receive the present benefits of Jesus presence among them, but secured a future in the outer darkness.
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, go to him on behalf of those you care about and many around you will be set free from the destruction of sin.
