Philippians 3:17-21 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
If we, as kids, did not have parents that helped us live our lives so that we enjoyed the present and at the same time prepared for the future, then we would enter adulthood prepared only for a miserable life. We would not be able to read, work, use money wisely or handle responsibility because all we did was play, eat what we wanted, live irresponsibly, and never give a thought to what we needed to do to prepare adulthood.
People who never think about life beyond the short time we live in our sinful body enter eternity equipped only to have all our earthly work burned up at best (1 Corinthians 3:10-15) or equipped only for eternal torment at worst (Revelation 20:11-15; 21:8). We need to remember that Jesus came to give people abundant and eternal life (John 3:16; 10:10b). If we know that we will live for an eternity, we will want to make sure we are a citizen of heaven by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the cross,
resurrection from the dead on the third day and that He is Lord of all. If we know we are a citizen of heaven, then we will desire to live as a citizen of heaven knowing that one day Jesus will return and transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body. If we become a citizen of heaven now and live like a citizen of heaven by the power of the Holy Spirit, then we will live an abundant life now and forever.
Do you see yourself as only a citizen of earth or do you see yourself as a citizen of heaven. If you see yourself as a citizen of earth only, you will not prepare for your future and will be greatly disappointed when it comes and miss the abundant living now God desires for you. If you consider yourself a citizen of heaven, then by faith live according the commands of that citizenship and experience abundant life now and forever.
