Romans 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 14 But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
A note to aid understanding: “what he has heard” in verse 16 and “hearing” in verse 17 translate the same Greek word. The word means “the faculty of hearing” or “the message or report heard”. In the context of our passage today, the correct translation would be “the message heard”.
Fact: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved - saved from sin’s penalty and power now and presence when the new heavens and earth are created.
Need: To call on Jesus, people need to hear the message of salvation, repent of their sin and believe the gospel.
Need: People are needed to communicate the message of salvation, the gospel, to those who have never heard it.
Need: People who know they have been sent by God to communicate the message (John 17:18) and go to the people in their sphere of influence to share the message of Jesus Christ.
Fact: Not all people who hear the gospel obey the commands to repent of their sins and believe that Christ died for their sins on the cross, rose again on the third day and is Lord over all (Romans 10:16; Mark 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9).
Fact: Romans 10:15 (“beautiful” is better translated “timely” in this context.) “How timely are the feet of those who preach (communicate) the good news!” When we walk into someone’s life and communicate the gospel of salvation it is timely for that person since “today is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
Fact: Faith comes by “hearing the message” (see note above) and the right message is the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). We need to get Christ’s message out to all who don’t believe so they can believe and be saved by calling on the name of the Lord!
