Romans 13:6 For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
The “same reason” refers to the God appointed government officials that are servants (ministers) of God put in place to protect us from the wrong doer (thieves, killers, rapists, foreign armies seeking to conquer us, and many other types of criminals). This passage of scripture limits the role of government in our lives. Today in America, the government is now trying to take the place of God and become everyone’s provider instead of everyone’s protector. This never works for the benefit of a country’s citizens, but rather destroys a country, just as all sinful acts do.
God instructs us to pay the taxes that are due to support the government servants. We pay those even if the government spends some of the taxes on immoral services such as supporting organizations such as Planned Parenthood. As individuals we are not to pay for abortions, but what part of our tax revenue goes where we do not know. We are to pay the taxes we owe.
We are to respect and value those in government for the office they fill and because they are people whom the Apostle Peter commands us to honor (1 Peter 2:17). Respecting and honoring (treating with value) does not mean we condone what they do! We need to pray for them daily (1 Timothy 2:1-3).
It is tax time coming up. Pay your taxes according to the rules of government. It is election time coming up again. Be responsible for voting in people who want to serve God and rule as He directs.
