Romans 5:6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
How long O Lord? This is a question that almost every believer in Jesus Christ asks – and more than once. How long do I need to wait to get married? How long until I get the job I trained for? How long before I am healed? How long will this difficult situation last? Following are some scriptural references that reveal God’s people asking Him, “How long?”
Psalm 13:1-2 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Psalm 35:17 How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! Psalm 74:9 We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long. 2 Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt. Psalm 90:13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! Psalm 119:84 How long must your servant endure? When will you judge those who persecute me? Revelation 6:10 They cried out with a loud voice, "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"
Our text today gives believers the confidence that the Lord will act at just the right time every time. His timing is always right. The Lord Jesus Christ is never early and never late. When people were weak, helpless, and sinning, Jesus died for them at the right time. Jesus loves believers just as much now and will never be late in acting on their behalf. Jesus has given every believer the capacity to wait in peace. Are you waiting in peace? Or are you anxiously asking, “How long Lord?” Rest assured in the midst of an intolerable situation that the Lord will be right on time to help you.
