Romans 7:24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
The person who makes the exclamatory statement, “Wretched person that I am!” has a good grasp on his current reality – “sin is ruining my life.” The question asked next reveals a grasp on his preferred future, freedom from sin that leads to death. The “So then…” statement clarifies it is slavery to sin keeping the person from his preferred future – freedom to daily live God’s good, pleasing and perfect will. It is only when we know our preferred future and our current reality that we can ask questions concerning how to move from our current reality and gain answers that get us to our preferred future.
It is very exciting when God gives us the answer we need to get to our preferred future. Notice how excited a person can be when the way to his preferred future is found, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Jesus can get us to our preferred future of not only knowing God’s will, but having the ability to live according to God’s will. God’s will leads to abundant life and is much preferred to living as a slave to sin which leads to death.
Are you wanting to live according to God’s good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2b), but not living it in your daily life? Know it is slavery to sin that is preventing you from living the life you think about and long for. Jesus has provided freedom from slavery to sin by dying on the cross (Romans 6:6-7). We receive that provision when we repent of our sin and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9). We use that provision when we live by faith in Jesus, the Son of God (Galatians 2:20). Living by faith means we are attempting to be and do God’s will expecting Jesus to fulfill our attempts with His power. Ask Jesus to help you do this. Asking Jesus for help to live by faith in the Son of God is according to His will and we know that if we ask anything according to His will we know we have what we have asked (1 John 5:14-15). Don’t continue to be a wretched person. Do start living by faith in the Son of God. You can achieve your preferred future by trusting Jesus.
