Standing Firm in Truth.
But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'
The first part of the letter was addressed to the pastor (Verses 18-23). Jesus commends what the pastor is doing right and brings rebuke and correction to him for his toleration of a self-proclaimed prophetess and her message that is leading members of the local church away from the truth. The second part of the letter is written to the pastor and those in the local church who have not departed from the truth and followed the teaching of Jezebel and learned “the deep things of Satan”.
The believers in Thyatira who stood firm in the truth have no further burdens laid on them. They are doing their assigned work given them by the Lord and bearing fruit that remains. Jesus informs these saints that those who conquer and keep the works He has assigned them to do, will be given authority over the nations and will rule with Jesus. The time period spoken of for their rule with Christ is during the thousand year reign of Christ on earth (see Psalm 2; Revelation 20:1-4). These believers will be given the morning star, which refers to ruling with King Jesus, the Son of David (Revelation 22:16).
Are you standing firm in the truth of God’s Word? People who claim a title and claim to speak for Jesus need to speak in accordance with the Word of God. Are you conquering? We conquer when we live by faith in the Son of God (1 John 5:5 “overcomes” same Greek work as “conquers”; Galatians 2:20). Are you doing the works He assigned you? We keep doing the Lord’s works assigned to us by staying in the Word and prayer and asking the Lord to reveal the works He has prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). If we can answer the above questions, “Yes”, then we can be assured we will rule with Christ as Jesus assured the believers of Thyatira.
